The implementation of the "Mountain Training Course" pilot project was initiated by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This project is designed to improve mountain training in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to provide future mountaineering instructors with the necessary knowledge and skills for further training of military units.

The course is conducted jointly with the Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing of Ukraine and consists of a winter and summer block. Servicemen of training centers and military units of the Ground Forces, airborne assault forces, marines and cadets of graduation courses of higher military educational institutions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will take part in it.

During the winter course, in particular, it is envisaged to carry out a long hiking march in mountainous terrain, climb the peaks on categorical mountaineering routes, conduct avalanche safety classes, organize insurance and self-insurance, transport a conditionally injured person over long distances, and the like. Also, the servicemen will spend the night in a snow cave (igloo) at an altitude of 1400 meters.

Participants in the course are divided into groups, for each of which the active preparation phase will last four days. During this time, the servicemen will walk only about 60 kilometers with elevation differences of more than 1200 meters, of which at least 25% of the distance will be overcome in the dark and will climb the highest peak of Ukraine - Mount Hoverla.

Reference: 5% of the territory of Ukraine is occupied by mountains, and in the occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea - up to 20%. In addition, the Donetsk industrial region, which is the most urbanized in our state, has a large number of waste heaps. Only in coal mines there are about 700 waste heaps up to 200 m high.
