Operation Neptune Spear is a covert U.S. special operation that took place on May 2, 2011, to eliminate Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda. The operation was carried out by SEAL Team 6 (DEVGRU) with the support of the CIA.
The operation
Special Forces infiltrated a fortified compound in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan, where bin Laden was hiding. Two teams of SEAL fighters entered the building supported by MH-60 Black Hawk stealth helicopters. During the assault, there was a brief battle in which bin Laden was eliminated by two shots to the chest and head.
Aftermath
Bin Laden's body was promptly taken aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, where he was buried at sea by Islamic traditions. The operation was an important U.S. victory in the fight against terrorism and a symbolic act of revenge for the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The operation was coordinated from the White House, where it was observed in real-time in the Situation Room by President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Pentagon leadership, and the CIA.
