QuikClot Combat Gauze Z-Folded XL Hemostatic Dressing
QuikClot Combat Gauze Z-Folded XL is a highly effective hemostatic dressing designed to provide rapid and reliable bleeding control in extreme conditions. It is a first-aid medical product widely used by military and law enforcement units around the world, including the United States Armed Forces and police agencies. The dressing is recommended for use in accordance with TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) guidelines — the standard for battlefield trauma care. The XL version is larger, making it even more versatile for treating large wounds and severe bleeding.
Purpose and mechanism of action
QuikClot Combat Gauze is a non-woven gauze impregnated with kaolin (a highly refined white clay). Kaolin is an inert natural mineral that activates Factor XII (Hageman factor) upon contact with blood — a key component in the body’s natural clotting cascade.
Unlike early-generation hemostatic agents, this gauze:
- Does not cause thermal burns — the clotting activation process does not generate heat.
- Works both mechanically and chemically — combining effective wound packing pressure with accelerated formation of a stable fibrin clot.
- Is universal — suitable for use on both adults and children.
Key features
- Z-Fold configuration. The gauze is folded in a Z-pattern, allowing it to be fed directly from the package into the wound. This reduces the risk of contamination and saves valuable time during emergency treatment.
- XL size. With a width of approximately 10.2 cm and a length of approximately 3.7 m, the gauze provides sufficient material to pack large wound cavities, such as injuries to the thigh or groin.
- Safety and hypoallergenic properties. Kaolin does not cause allergic reactions and can be easily removed from the wound during surgical treatment.
- X-ray detectable strip. A radiopaque line runs along the entire length of the gauze, making it clearly visible on X-ray images and ensuring complete removal of the material in hospital conditions.
- Compact packaging. The hermetically sealed vacuum package features tear notches that allow it to be opened quickly, even while wearing gloves or with wet hands.
How it works
-
Apply pressure to the bleeding site.
-
Firmly pack the wound with QuikClot gauze.
-
Maintain direct pressure for 3 minutes or until bleeding stops.
-
Apply a compression bandage over the packed wound.
QuikClot Combat Gauze Z-Folded XL is an effective, compact, and reliable hemostatic dressing that enables rapid and safe bleeding control in critical situations, giving the user confidence and control even under extreme conditions.
