Modular Sleep System (MSS) ACU is a universal sleep kit designed as standard issue for the U.S. military. Although the system is officially part of U.S. Army gear, its components have long been a common choice among NATO military units and numerous special forces worldwide. The primary purpose of the MSS is to ensure comfortable sleep in almost any climate, whether in extreme heat or severe cold.
The system’s design is based on three separate modules. They can be used individually or combined, providing varying levels of protection against low temperatures. All parts securely attach with zippers and fasteners, ensuring full compatibility and convenience in the field.
In its full configuration, which includes both summer and winter sleeping bags along with a waterproof bivy cover, the system is rated for comfortable sleep down to –30 °F (approximately –34 °C), according to technical specifications. In extreme cold conditions, it is recommended to combine the MSS with a multilayer ECWCS thermal system.

- Summer Sleeping Bag Patrol Bag:
Designed for use in relatively warm conditions — approximately 50 °F to 68 °F (about 10 °C to 20 °C), and with added clothing insulation, it can withstand temperatures down to 32 °F (0 °C).
Made from lightweight, durable ripstop nylon, making it strong and tear-resistant.
Equipped with an adjustable hood for better protection against wind and heat loss.

- Winter Sleeping Bag Intermediate Cold Weather (ICW Bag):
Designed for cold conditions with an approximate temperature range of 32 °F to 5 °F (0 °C to –15 °C). When used alone, the comfort zone is typically 59 °F to 32 °F (15 °C to 0 °C). Made from heavy-duty, water-resistant ripstop nylon for enhanced durability and moisture protection.
Insulation is polyester fiber, and the foot area includes an extra reinforced layer to retain heat.

- All-Weather Outer Cover Bivy Cover (GORE-TEX):
Made from three-layer GORE-TEX material, providing waterproofing, wind protection, and excellent breathability.
Fully encloses the sleeping bag from the inside, offering additional protection against rain, snow, and wind.

The standard set includes two bags — Large Stuff Sack and Small Stuff Sack, designed for convenient transport and storage of system components.
