The 3+ CONTR OMNI VII Electron Optical Converter (EOC) amplifies ambient visible light and converts near-infrared (IR) light into visible light, which can then be seen by a person in seemingly total darkness.
OMNI, or OMNIBUS, refers to a series of contracts under which the U.S. Army has procured 3rd generation night vision devices (NVDs) from 2006 to the present day.
The 3+ generation indicates the level of technology utilized in the EOP. Third-generation devices provide the best image quality of any generation of EOPs. They are characterized by:
High sensitivity: the ability to detect the smallest light sources;
High resolution: clear and detailed images;
High dynamic range: the ability to display both very bright and very dark areas of the image.
OMNI VII is a type of photocathode that is used in EOPs. The photocathode is the heart of the EOP and converts light into electrons. OMNI VII is known for its high sensitivity, especially in low light conditions, and provides a clear, contrasty image.
The NVD image is monochrome green because green was considered the easiest color to see for long periods in the dark.
An automatic closed-loop power supply system regulates the photocathode voltage, allowing the NVD to adapt instantly to changing lighting conditions.
A remote ion barrier results in reduced image noise. In turn, the low number of image intensification tubes ensures 15,000 hours of operation before requiring replacement.
High-quality optics provide clear and bright images, allowing the user to maximize information about their surroundings.
