Army Aircrew Combat Uniform (A2CU) is a specialized flame-resistant combat jacket designed for aviation crews and personnel working with combat vehicles, including pilots, aviation technicians, drivers, and armored vehicle crew members. The uniform enhances comfort during prolonged time inside vehicles and provides protection against open flame during pre-flight preparation, refueling, flight operations, and technical maintenance tasks.
The jacket features a relaxed ergonomic cut and is secured with a durable metal zipper. A stand-up collar protects the neck, while the shoulders and elbows are additionally reinforced to increase wear resistance in high-stress areas.
Inset chest pockets with metal zippers are covered by Velcro-secured flaps. The sleeves are equipped with patch pockets featuring flaps and additional zipper access, pen or pencil slots, and Velcro panels for unit insignia and identification patches.
On the right side of the jacket, a dedicated port is provided for routing the hose of the Microclimate Cooling Vest, a cooling system used in high-temperature environments (cooling vest not included).
Waist fit is adjustable via an integrated belt with Velcro fastening, allowing the jacket to be tailored to individual body shape and worn equipment.
The A2CU is constructed from Nomex® fabric, composed of 92% meta-aramid (Nomex), 5% para-aramid (Kevlar), and 3% conductive fiber. The flame-resistant and thermal protective properties of Nomex are inherent at the molecular level and remain effective throughout the entire service life of the garment.
The material has low thermal conductivity, reducing the risk of second- and third-degree burns. It does not burn, melt, or produce smoke and is self-extinguishing. Kevlar fibers enhance tear resistance during sudden flame exposure, while conductive fibers ensure stable performance in potentially explosive environments. When exposed to high temperatures, the fabric pores close, limiting hot air penetration; under prolonged heat exposure, the material densifies and forms a protective carbonized layer.
