Ballistic Side Cummerbund Inserts for U-WIN BASE Plate Carrier, UHMWPE, Size 2

The U-WIN BASE Size 2 ballistic insert set is designed for installation inside the side cummerbunds of a plate carrier, providing additional protection for the lateral areas of the torso. Thanks to its extended coverage area, the set significantly enhances personal protection without adding excessive weight to the equipment. The inserts are specifically tailored to the geometry of the U-WIN BASE Size 2 cummerbunds, ensuring a secure fit and proper positioning inside the carrier.

The protective elements are made from Chinese-manufactured Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), a modern ballistic material widely used in soft armor applications due to its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Each insert consists of 55 layers of specialized ballistic fabric that effectively absorb and disperse the energy of incoming threats.

To preserve the ballistic properties of the material, each insert is sealed inside a waterproof protective cover. This design minimizes the effects of moisture, dust, and other environmental factors, ensuring reliable performance even in demanding field conditions.

Ballistic Performance

The total protective area of the set is 10.2 dm², providing effective coverage of the side torso zones. According to testing results, the inserts demonstrate performance equivalent to Protection Class 2 under DSTU 8782:2018 penetration resistance requirements.

The set is capable of stopping a 5.9 g Makarov pistol projectile, an 8 g Luger pistol projectile, and a 5.5 g TT 7.62×25 mm projectile fired from a distance of 5 meters. Due to the absence of integrated trauma-reduction pads, backface deformation may exceed 25 mm.

Fragmentation Protection

In addition to ballistic testing, the inserts were evaluated according to the NATO STANAG 2920 standard. The confirmed V50 value of 723 m/s demonstrates effective resistance against high-velocity fragments and secondary projectiles.

Practical Design

Each insert measures 15 × 34 cm, allowing optimal use of the available cummerbund space while maintaining a streamlined profile. With a total weight of only 596 grams, the set provides enhanced protection with minimal impact on mobility and long-term wearing comfort.
