Ceramic armour plates are an integral component of protection against bullets, fragments and other mechanical damage in combat environments. They are known for their high strength, impact resistance and relatively light weight, making them a popular choice among military, law enforcement and civilians in combat zones.
Buying ceramic armour plates will be a good option for militaries who care about manoeuvrability, because compared to other materials such as steel, ceramic is significantly lighter, allowing for high mobility for the user.
What should you know before buying ceramic armour plates?
- Level of protection. Most ceramic armour plates belong to the 6th, the highest class according to the State Standards of Ukraine DSTU 8782:2018 or the American standard NIJ IV. Such products are able to withstand a direct hit by an armour-piercing bullet and fragments flying at high speed.
- Limited shelf life. Ceramic plates have a shelf life of 5 to 7 years. Even if there is no visible damage, the plates should be replaced with new ones, because old plates gradually lose their ballistic properties; their continued use can be life-threatening.
- Brittleness. Ceramic armour plates are highly effective in protecting against bullets and fragments, but the material itself is susceptible to breakage and is quite brittle. When hit by bullets, the ballistic properties of ceramic plates can be significantly reduced, but the plate will only become completely unusable after one more hit at the same point or if it is visibly severely damaged. In addition, ceramics can crack, crumble and break if stored and transported improperly, so they have to be handled carefully.
- Size. When choosing a set of plates, you should be guided by their parameters: despite the similar design, the plates may have different dimensions and thickness, which may not fit your plate carrier. Be sure to take measurements of your plate carrier or consult with a manager before ordering!
Varieties of ceramic plates
In our catalogue you can find ceramic plates of the 4th and 6th protection class according to DSTU, which equates to the US standard NIJ IV.
- SAPI. Plates for the front and back of the plate carrier, withstanding three hits of bullets up to M80 7,62x51 mm. Composed of ceramic material with a durable outer composite coating.
- ESAPI. Plates for front and rear of the plate carrier to withstand three bullet hits up to M80 7.62x51mm. Advanced SAPIs consisting of 10mm+ thick carbide boron and a NVMPE substrate. They have improved effectiveness: unlike previous models, protect even against armour-piercing bullets.
- ESBI. Side plates withstanding 3 rounds of M80 7.62×51mm, 7.62×54mm, 5.56×45mm bullets or 2 rounds of .30-06 M2 AP armour-piercing bullets. The construction is similar to the unified armour for chest and back: monolithic layer of boron carbide on a lining of high-molecular polyethylene.
