The Victory Hand is a well-known gesture shown with the index and middle fingers of the hand pointing upwards, signifying victory and peace. The mediaeval origin of this gesture dates back to the Hundred Years' War: captured English and Welsh archers who terrorised the French had these two fingers on their right hand cut off so that they could not hold a bow. The archers, knowing this, taunted the French before the battle by showing them their uninjured fingers, as if to say, fear us, enemies!
During the Second World War, this gesture was a symbol of victory over the invaders. In the UK in particular, it was considered a "victory salute" and spread thanks to Winston Churchill.
Today this gesture is widely used by the military as a non-verbal symbol of victory over the enemy.
