For today's review, we got Leatherman Charge TTi in its gift version. A significant difference between this configuration is the presence of a tin can, in which the multitool itself is in pressed form and under it all the other good, which includes: a case, a Bit Kit, a removable bracket for attaching to the belt / pocket, and a removable ring for attaching tool on a lanyard or key ring, instructions.
The case is made by combining nylon and leather, from which the back wall and valve pouch are made. The valve is fixed with a button. On the back of the case there are holes that allow you to fasten it to the trouser belt in both vertical and horizontal positions.
Inside the pouch there are two compartments: one for the Leatherman Charge TTi itself, the other for the Bit Kit.
A multi-tool fits freely in a case, places under it can even be said with a margin.
In addition, there will be quite enough space for a set of Bit Kit bits, and in two round sleeves that are located on both sides of the main compartment, additional accessories such as Bit Driver Extender and the like can also be accommodated.
Please note that the Leatherman Charge TTi covers have recesses for quick access to the four main tools. And in general, the multitool design is very ergonomic: titanium pads, soft corners, fillets. It lies perfectly in the hands and certainly does not pierce or wipe the lining of the pocket of your trousers.
To access the rest of the tools you just have to spread out the pliers, which in principle is feasible with one hand.
And to extract the tool you need from the bowels of Leatherman Charge TTi. Before getting acquainted with each of them closer, we will pay attention to the most important of them - pliers.
This tool is not just pliers, but a combination of pliers, round-nose pliers, nippers and crimping tongs, which makes it truly universal.
As you can see in the photo above, the halves of the pliers are brought together quite accurately, without backlashes and gaps, which favorably affects their performance.
Let's move from pliers to new tools, to which there is external access when the multitool is in a folded state.
The main cutting edge of Leatherman Charge TTi is made of S30V steel. Clip Point blade shape with hole for stop when opening the blade.
The secondary serreytorny knife is made of 420HC stainless steel. It has a similar hole for quick extraction of a multi-tool from the body and, in addition, is complemented by a hook in which an additional sling-cutter is located. With it, you can easily cut the rope and other fibrous materials, such as car seat belts.
The next instrument from the four main ones is a saw. Her teeth are arranged in 2 rows, similar to SOG PowerLock, but unlike him, they have a shallower depth. And if PowerLock successfully copes with sawing raw wood, then due to the shorter tooth depth the Leatherman Charge TTi saw will often clog and lose significantly in cutting speed.
Yes, I know that comparing SOG PowerLock by class is more appropriate with Leatherman SuperTool 300, but not Charge, but most of all I had to use PowerLock so far because such comparisons beg to be somehow involuntarily. Excuse me for that.
The fourth tool with external access is a file. On the one hand has a cross blade suitable for wood and metal.
On the other hand, a fine diamond-coated blade for finer work with tougher materials, such as dressing / sharpening the cutting edge of your main knife and other similar activities.
To access the tools described below, you will have to decompose your Leatherman Charge TTi.
The first of these is the can opener. You will be able to uncork a bottle with its use with no less success, but it is interesting, first of all, not by this.
On its reverse side is also a small recess with sharpening. It is intended for exposing wires.
This device is nothing more than an adapter for Leatherman's proprietary bits. In fact, this part from Leatherman Charge TTi makes me have the most conflicting feelings. On the one hand, a very compact adapter that takes up little space and is especially unpretentious in operation. On the other hand, these are the bits themselves, or rather their proprietorship. Only bits from Leatherman are suitable for this adapter, and if you pay attention, all of these R3, T15, 7 \ 64 and 050 from the standard kit are of little use in our area. Personally, I did not find at home that they could unwind. Therefore, either here to supplement them with bits from the Leatherman Bit Kit, which will have to be purchased separately, or buy hexagonal bits from us and "finely modify the file." In both cases, additional costs 🙁 If you have no problems with this, take the Leatherman Bit Kit, halve the bits and hexagons from it, and pack the most demanded into the case along with your Charge.
But this tool is much more applicable here - a medium-sized flat-blade screwdriver.
Another adapter for bits, this time small. The complete bit has two endings on which are located quite miniature flat and Phillips screwdrivers. This watch is very happy watchmakers and electronics engineers, who sometimes have to unscrew the bolts from thin deep channels. In my case, the profit from this tool is small.
But the scissors in Leatherman Charge TTi I strongly like. Even though they are smaller than the scissors from SOG PowerLock, working with them is a pleasure. The folding mechanism with a twist helps to significantly save the space they occupy inside the tool.
All instruments that are inside the Leatherman Charge TTi are blocked by such a “rocker” like Piano Lock.
For the four main instruments with external access, a lock is also provided, but already of the Liner Lock type. Basic tools can not only be laid out, but also folded with one hand.
The manufacturer also took care of additional options when carrying his brainchild. So, as part of the Leatherman Charge TTi kit, there is an additional clip that allows you to cling the multitool directly to the trouser belt, or fix it inside the pocket in the manner of folders.
The second option is a ring for compatibility with the collarbone ring. It is also easy to adapt a paracord lanyard to it, which will help prevent you from losing your instrument. Both of these devices are inserted into the hole on one of the "legs" of the multitool and are blocked by the same Piano Lock rocker.
The set of tools included in LeathermanCharge TTi, all these small screwdrivers, sling cutters and blades for stripping wires leave me with a strong impression of the urban focus of this multitool. This emphasizes the special emphasis on ergonomics and ease of use, weight loss due to the use of titanium, etc. If the field orientation is read in the entire SOG Powerlock design, then Leatherman Charge TTi is rather a faithful companion in urban conditions, an integral part of EDC. If you are looking for a compact, functional and lightweight full-size multitool for the city with its abundance of wires, plastic and electronics - pay attention to Leatherman Charge TTi. We also remind you that the multitool is an addition to your main cutting tool, and not its replacement.
Piano Lock.
