NAR Scissor Leash is a North American Rescue retractor, originally designed to fix paramedic scissors to prevent them from being lost or dropped during transportation.
You could already see this “box” in our recent Leatherman Raptor review. Due to the tangible cost of the latter, in my opinion, a retractor is simply necessary for him. Therefore, I will briefly talk about what it is. A retractor or retailer is an additional method of fixing and securing equipment from loss. A kind of "plan B" in case an important / expensive piece of equipment suddenly falls out of your pocket or pouch during transportation or use. I think everyone knows a variety of rope lanyards or “leashes”, which are recommended to additionally fix important or priority items of equipment (keys, lights, telephones, GPS-navigators, cameras, other digital devices, weapons, night vision devices, etc.) . A retractor is essentially the same “leash”, only with a spring through which the cable is twisted independently, depriving you of problems with clinging to environmental elements or other equipment.
NAR Scissor Leash was originally designed to hold the NAR Trauma Shears paramedic scissors. In a hurry to assist the injured, scissors are often removed at the very beginning to provide access to the place of damage and then rarely return to their original place, but simply throw themselves in a bag / pouch, lie on the ground, etc. If this is also assistance on the battlefield, where it may be necessary to urgently move the victim from the risk zone, then the scissors, in most cases, remain on the ground. In such a situation, you simply lose a very important tool that you may need in the future to help the next victim. That's why North American Rescue came up with the NAR Scissor Leash, which automatically returns the scissors to their original place as soon as you release them from your hands. To do this, it is equipped with the following features:
- A carabiner on a flexible coupling for fixing to equipment.
- Key ring.
- Resistance to salt water.
- Self-cleaning.
- Case dimensions: 4 cm. X 15 cm. X 5 cm. X 1,5 cm. (Width \ height \ depth).
- Cable length: 91.5 cm.
- Total length when deployed: 107 cm.
The NAR Scissor Leash itself is a square box of black plastic, inside of which there is a metal cable and a spring mechanism, and a carbine on one side and a small “tail” with a key ring. The front side is densely filled with the logo and a link to the NAR website, patent and NSN numbers, as well as evidence of NAR's cooperation with Gear Keeper.
The back side offers a view of the bonding points of the box halves and the axis of the spring mechanism, around which the cable is wound and a spiral spring is fixed.
The NAR Scissor Leash carbine is made of high-quality plastic, has a metal locking mechanism and allows you to fix the retractor both on the waist slots of trousers and tactical equipment with PALS \ LaserCut interfaces. The carbine rotates 360 degrees around the mount. There is an additional connecting link between the carabiner and the casing of the retractor box, which makes it possible to tilt the carabiner slightly relative to the box. If the carabiner were glued into the box tightly, then when the box is skewed and jerked, it would experience significant overload. In this case, this link absorbs a similar deformation, extending the life of the product.
On the opposite side of the NAR Scissor Leash, we see a small round-shaped fastex with a small loop in which a metal key ring is passed. It is this fastex that is pulled out of the retractor on a metal cable to a distance of about 91 cm. The metal ring allows you to fix not only the keys, but also a wide range of objects and tools that have compatible holes for fixing. If desired, it can be replaced with a paracord ring, the diameter of the ring in fastex allows this. In this case, the junction will not emit extraneous sounds.
A more detailed photo of the fastex and the NAR Scissor Leash cable itself. The cable, as mentioned earlier, is metallic and has a braid made of a material resembling a medical cambric (tubes from droppers) of small cross section. Thanks to such a coating, the likelihood of rusting the cable, contaminating it itself and objects in contact with it (in the form of your hands or clothing / equipment) is reduced. According to the manufacturer, the cable does not even rust under the influence of salt water.
If you disconnect the halves of fastex, it becomes possible to completely remove it from the cable by threading the cable stopper through the slot in a plastic ball to which the fastex itself is attached. A similar opportunity is provided in case you need to pass the cable through the holes of small diameter, where the fastex itself will not crawl. Remove the fastex, thread the cable through the hole and assemble the fastex back on the other side of the hole. The cable will not pull inside the coil, you can not worry about it. This connector also allows you to temporarily disconnect your tool from the retractor in general, in case the meter cable length is not enough for you, or, for example, you need to transfer the tool to someone. As for the length of the cable, when fixing the NAR Scissor Leash on the belt, it allows you to freely move the fixed object to the distance of your outstretched arm in all directions.
For this very reason, NAR Scissor Leash will serve as an excellent addition not only to the NAR Trauma Shears paramedic scissors shown in the photo above, but also to any item that you would like to avoid losing. Let the item out of your hands? Just go back to the NAR Scissor Leash fixation location and it will be there. And he will return there over and over again.
