The presence of a weapon in the safe does not make you a good marksman. Regardless of the caliber, a weapon is a tool that you need to be able to use, developing the necessary skills directly during practical exercises to the point of automatism. Accuracy and speed between shots, or the number of hits per unit of time, are one of the key parameters for measuring the effectiveness of both the weapon itself and the shooter himself.
During self-preparation, to determine the accuracy, it is enough to use different types of targets, but to measure the rate of fire within a certain time frame, you will need a shooting timer. Of course, it is possible to use an ordinary stopwatch, but this method is more laborious, less accurate in measuring a series of shots and requires the obligatory presence of a second.
The basic principle of operation of any timer, regardless of model and manufacturer, is quite simple. The built-in sensitive microphone allows you to accurately recognize the sound of a shot, and the electronic filling, to process it and fix it with a time interval. Ultimately, the received data is displayed on the built-in display, or a remote display of a third-party device, such as a smartphone. In this case, both single and series of shots are "caught".
The Shooters Global Timer, from the Shooters Global brand, was introduced back in 2018, and subjectively is a relatively budget entry-level device that is endowed with almost all the necessary basic features, both for independent training and with a partner / instructor. The timer comes in a bright and very presentable cardboard box. The kit, in addition to the device itself, has a small 30 cm cord for charging the built-in battery, as well as a "one-page", but quite detailed and well-read, instruction in Ukrainian.
The timer is made in an elongated rectangular case made of matte plastic, the length of which does not exceed 120 mm, width 49 mm, and thickness 35 mm, with a clip, the thickness will increase to 40 mm. The total weight of the device is no more than 163 grams. According to the manufacturer itself, the case is protected from dust and splashes. Build quality is relatively good, but not without flaws. The color of the case is uneven, there are traces of casting or processing, plus the fit of the case parts is far from ideal. But this is all, of course, "aesthetics", which has no effect on the operation of the device.
On the front side there is a perforation for a microphone in the form of a brand logo, on the back side there is only a removable steel clip. On the sides of the timer there are two buttons, which in the basic mode are responsible for scrolling through the results in the current session. After a long press, the button on the right side allows you to scroll through the recorded sessions, as well as to clear the memory, where up to 32 sessions can be stored simultaneously. Pressing the button on the left side enters the menu for adjusting the microphone sensitivity level and enabling / disabling the sensitivity cut-off (ATT).
At the bottom of the timer there is a Micro-USB port, which is protected by a silicone plug, LED indicators of the charging process, reset buttons to factory settings, as well as an individual serial number that matches the number on the box, and contacts for communication with the service center. The provided Micro-USB port allows charging the built-in battery with a declared capacity of up to 1200 mAh, which should be enough for 16 hours of operation. In our tests, a fully charged battery lasted 15 hours and 37 minutes, according to the indicator.
At the top of the Shooters Global Timer, there is a small LCD display with a two-row data output, as well as the main button for starting and stopping the timer. The initial screen displays information about the battery level, the best split, the session number and the total number of shots in the series, as well as the number of the last shot and its time. Session recording is activated by long pressing the main button, then, with a delay of 3 seconds, a sufficiently loud sound signal will sound, indicating the start of recording.
First impressions of the Shooters Global Timer are mostly positive. I liked the readiness of the device for use straight out of the box, without the need for lengthy subtraction of instructions and subsequent meticulous adjustment. Simple and intuitive controls. Successful choice of display position, clear and well-readable display of information, including when wearing the timer on your belt, and in sunny weather. The general form-factor also turned out to be very convenient, the device is comfortable and “secure” in the hand.
During testing, false positives and missing shots were not observed. The only thing that I didn’t like so far is the lack of the possibility of turning off, or setting, a three-second delay, as well as the possibility of programming a fixed interval of time for performing the exercise, which would allow doing idle workouts.
The order for the presented Shooters Global Timer was placed in the specialized online store Punisher, where it is currently the most affordable of the presented ones. The approximate checkout cost will be almost 78 $, excluding shipping costs.
