The US Army Combat Uniform (ACU) has long transcended the boundaries of the American military. Today, it is actively used by service members, instructors, competitive shooters, and security units across the globe. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are no exception, where elements of US contract uniforms are frequently used for both training and real combat missions.
However, the designations NYCO, FRACU, or IHWCU often appear in set titles, frequently leading to confusion. Externally, these uniform variants may look almost identical, but the difference lies in the fabric composition, intended purpose, and performance characteristics. Together with the Punisher military store, we will break down what’s what.

NYCO – The Classic Military Uniform Fabric
The designation NYCO comes from the words nylon and cotton. It is a blend of nylon and cotton in a 50/50 proportion – one of the most common materials for sewing field uniforms.
-
Durability: This fabric is known for high strength, excellent abrasion resistance, and a long service life.
-
Maintenance: Even after prolonged use, NYCO clothing typically retains its shape, does not fade significantly, and barely deforms after washing.
-
Stealth: Crucially, the material meets NIR Signature Management standards, which reduce a person's visibility in the infrared spectrum. This is critical for military applications – especially when working with night optics.
From personal experience: NYCO uniforms feel slightly denser than lightweight tropical variants. They handle rough use exceptionally well, including friction against gear, body armor, and plate carriers. This is why many service members consider it a universal option for most climatic conditions.

FRACU – Flame-Resistant Army Combat Uniform
FRACU is a specialized version of the ACU with enhanced fire protection.
The base of the fabric is Lenzing FR fiber – a flame-resistant cellulosic material often combined with other technical fibers to create protective clothing. The fabric composition typically includes rayon, aramid, and nylon, but contains no cotton. This combination allows the fabric to reduce the risk of ignition and limit the spread of flames.
FRACU was created based on real combat experience – specifically operations where personnel might come into contact with open flames, hot surfaces, or blast waves.
In practice: FRACU can sometimes feel a bit stiffer or denser to the touch compared to NYCO. Some service members also note that it may be less comfortable in hot climates. However, in conditions where there is a risk of fire, this compromise is justified. Today, most new US Army contracts no longer provide for the mass production of FRACU – it has been gradually replaced by newer uniform variants.

IHWCU – Modern Uniform for Hot Climates
The Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform (IHWCU) was created as a lighter and more comfortable alternative to the standard ACU for tropical and hot regions. The primary goal of this uniform is to reduce overheating during prolonged operations in hot climates.
-
Fabric: The IHWCU fabric consists of approximately 57% nylon and 43% cotton. Special materials, including Tencel Lyocell, may be used internally to help wick moisture more effectively.
-
Design Changes: The tunic's construction was redesigned – for example, the chest pockets were removed to reduce overheating in the chest area under body armor.
-
Ergonomics: The sleeves feature a raglan cut, which works better under gear and does not create unnecessary folds.
From personal experience: The difference between a standard ACU and an IHWCU is particularly noticeable during active movement. In hot weather, the lighter fabric and improved ventilation truly help you stay operational longer.
IHWCU development began after numerous complaints from US service members serving in the hot regions of the Middle East. Soldiers noted that the standard ACU was too heavy and dissipated heat poorly under body armor. As a result, the new uniform was tested directly in combat units for several years before being officially adopted.

Which Uniform is Best to Choose?
The choice between NYCO, FRACU, and IHWCU depends primarily on the conditions of use:
-
Universal Use: If you need a durable and hardy field uniform for everyday use, NYCO remains the proven choice.
-
Fire Safety: If there is a risk of contact with open flames or heated surfaces, it is more logical to choose FRACU.
-
Extreme Heat: For hot climates, long marches, or working under heavy equipment, IHWCU is the best fit.
All these variants share a common feature: the use of ripstop technology, which increases fabric strength and prevents tears from spreading.

Many photography and outdoor brands have begun using the same fabric technologies that were created specifically for military uniforms.
Despite their external similarities, the US Army Combat Uniform sets marked NYCO, FRACU, and Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform are designed for different conditions of use. NYCO is a versatile and durable option for most tasks. FRACU provides additional protection against flames and high temperatures. IHWCU is designed for hot climates and increased comfort during intense work. Therefore, the optimal choice depends primarily on the conditions of use, temperature, and the specifics of the tasks.
